Conversations about female reproductive health and PCOS need to be normalised

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

Conversations about female reproductive health are often suppressed and missed from the public discourse. This is especially true when it comes to conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). PCOS is a condition that affects many women, but it is often not talked about openly. This is because there are a lot of misconceptions and myths about PCOS that are often taken for granted. Be it friends or family, nobody ever talks about the issues related to female reproductive health openly.

Talking about various problems that women go on a daily basis can help both the genders understand the gravity of the situation and help initiate a dialogue. Women who have PCOS often face many problems during their menstrual cycle. They suffer from hormonal imbalances that cause hyperandrogenism. This is a condition where women have high androgen levels and low estrogen and progesterone levels. This can cause many problems like excessive hair growth, acne, irregular periods and obesity. All these issues are often seen as taboo in our society, which is why it is important to talk about them openly.

Open conversations will help people understand the gravity of the situation and also help build empathy. This will, in turn, lead to better understanding between the genders. If women are allowed proper control over their reproductive health then many of the problems that they face on a daily basis today would not exist. Normalizing these conversations could be one of the best ways to start off with making people see how important reproductive health is.

Women Face Numerous Issues With Their Reproductive Health, But They're Usually Kept Under Wraps Because Of Societal Stigmas

Women's Reproductive Health in India has taken a turn for the worse. Reproductive health is an important aspect of our lives, but due to taboos surrounding it, women are unable to openly discuss things like their menstrual cycles, premenstrual syndrome or other issues related to reproductive health. Women are often ridiculed and shamed for having these conversations, and as a result, they are forced to suffer in silence. One such problem that many women face is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a hormone disorder that affects women of childbearing age. It can cause problems like infertility, obesity, and menstrual irregularities. Unfortunately, many women go their entire lives without being diagnosed with PCOS. They suffer from a range of issues like excessive facial and body hair, fertility problems and weight gain.

These conditions affect them both physically and mentally, but because these conversations are never normalised, women never know how to deal with the problem effectively. They suffer for years before finally realising that they have PCOS.

Open and honest conversations about PCOS and other reproductive health issues are necessary for two reasons. Firstly, it will help women suffering from these conditions to open up and seek help. Secondly, it will help the people around them to understand the magnitude of the problem. Reproductive health is an important part of our lives, and we need to start talking about it openly and honestly. Only then will we be able to make a change.
